They focus on the health of the whole person, combining physical, psychological and social aspects of care.

A practice nurse is involved in almost every aspect of patient care and treatment.

Practice nurses can help with:

• Treating small injuries
• Helping with minor operations done under local anaesthetic
• Helping people manage long-term conditions
• Health screening
• Family planning
• Running vaccination programmes, such as flu vaccinations
• Running programmes to help people stop smoking

Healthcare assistants are an integral part of the team. They assist the GPs and practice nurse team in the service and delivery of care management for the practice population.

Tasks may include:

• Blood pressure management
• Venepuncture
• Recording ECGs
• Health promotion, such as smoking cessation

Receptionists are responsible for coordinating the daily administration of doctors, staff, visitors and patients at the surgery.

They schedule appointments, answer patient enquiries, handle patient emergencies, and monitor stock and supplies at the surgery.

Community Midwives

The midwife will attend to the needs of expectant and newly delivered mothers and their babies.

Health Visitors

Health visitors offer advice and support on all health issues. Home visits can be arranged for patients who are housebound.
