If you have already been given a Crisis Line number from a health professional, call it.

If you are under the care of a mental health team and have a care plan that states who to contact when you need urgent care, follow this plan.

Dental Issues

If you develop tooth or gum pain:

  • Contact your own dentist for emergency treatment.
  • If you don’t see a dentist regularly or it’s out of hours, call 111.

You will be triaged by a dental nurse who will advise you and, if necessary, arrange an emergency dental appointment.

Charges: Urgent dental treatment costs £14.30 unless you are exempt from NHS charges (evidence required at appointment).

What counts as a dental emergency?

  • Bleeding from a recent surgical site that won’t stop
  • Severe swelling causing difficulty breathing or swallowing
  • Damage to teeth or jaws due to an accident

Toothache on its own is not a dental emergency – please do not attend A&E for this.
